With your new students’ union, Cambridge SU having launched, the time has come to say goodbye to CUSU.
Since it was originally founded in 1971, CUSU has been campaigning on behalf of students for nearly half a century. In that time, it’s secured representation for students on the University Council and General Board (1971), prevented planned University-wide rent increases (1999), organised to save the Cambridge Bursary (2011) and delivered hundreds of wins for students across the years.
We are incredibly proud of the work CUSU has done over the years, and this year has been no different. With the work being lead by such a fantastic team of sabbatical officers who have campaigned on all sorts of important issues, from loneliness to bursaries to sexual misconduct on campus.
The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted just how important student representation is in Cambridge. When students are facing unprecedented challenges and huge disruption to their education, a strong students’ union is crucial in making sure their voices are heard and standing up for their interests.
That’s why we are so excited for what Cambridge SU will offer to students. For the first time in its history, Cambridge will have a single students’ union, with better representation, and more resources than ever before. Campaigning, planning and preparing for Cambridge SU has taken up a huge amount of time, but delivering this historic change has and will be undoubtedly worth it.
The new Cambridge SU sabbatical team will start their term in office on Monday and we want to wish them all the very best of luck. The next academic year will certainly be a difficult one, but we ensure that Cambridge SU will be doing all we can to support students in these strange and uncertain times.
