Gender Expression Fund Update

Unfortunately applications for the fund are temporarily closed due to a high volume of applicants. In the mean time please check out other sources of funding below.

You are also welcome to send us an email at neith.charlesworth@cambridgesu.co.uk if you have any other questions.

The Cambridge SU has established the Gender Expression Fund, which aims to support students who require financial assistance to purchase items that help them feel more comfortable with their gender presentation, including (but not limited to) binders, packers, breast forms, and concealing underwear. The Fund may also be used to reimburse expenses from travel to and from trans-affirming services eg. Gender Identity Clinic appointments.

How much support is available

To ensure as many students as possible are able to access the fund, there is a £50 cap on the amount of funding each student can receive within an academic year.

Eligibility

This fund is available to all registered students at the University of Cambridge, including students at the Institute of Continuing Education and Foundation Year students.

It covers:

  • Costs of travelling to and from trans-affirming services
  • Items such as binders, packers, breast forms, and concealing underwear
  • Smaller items that aid in gender expression, such as clothes and make-up
  • It would not be used to make donations to GoFundMe or cover the costs of private surgeries

Overall, there is a limited amount of funding available, and once the fund is depleted, no further funding requests will be accepted.

How to apply

Students can apply for the fund by completing the following form https://www.cambridgesu.co.uk/surveys/gefapply/.

In the form, please provide your Name or Alias, College, Contact email, Amount of funding being requested and summary of the proposed expense. Students can either apply for an item to be purchased on their behalf or funding for travel. Funding for travel will be provided through reimbursement. Reimbursements may take between two-four weeks to be processed.

All requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Advice and Welfare Manager and the Director of Membership Engagement. Students can expect a response within 5 working days of submitting the request form.

Please note that all details shared with us will remain confidential within the SU in line with the SU Data Protection Policy. Details from funding requests will only be shared with relevant parties for the purpose of fulfilling, recording and compiling anonymous reports on the fund's performance and spending.
