CU Ancient Literature Society

A diverse reading society aimed at anyone with an interest in ancient literature: anthropologists, historians, ancient linguists, or anybody else. The only criterion for membership is an honest desire to learn more about ancient cultures and their literary works. Beginners who have never studied an ancient language before are especially welcome. Texts are always read in translation, so there is absolutely no knowledge required of any langauge other than English!

This Lent we will be meeting online via Google Meet on Saturdays at 3:30 to discuss passages from the Chinese text Romance of the Three Kingdoms. We stress that this is open to anyone, especially those who know nothing about this text since the aim of the society is to enable people to learn more about ancient literature.

"Buying Membership" (free) on the Cambridge SU website just adds you to our mailing list, so please do sign up if you are at all interested! There is absolutely no commitment attached to this, and it enables you to receive our weekly emails containing the text we will be discussing that week. If you don't hear from us within a week after "Buying Membership", please drop us an email/facebook message because sometimes we lose people's signups in the system, so give us a poke and we'll make sure you're definitely added. 

We do also offer membership (£5 for a year, £10 for life), but we don't ask for this until at least halfway through your first term with us. The reason for this is so that you can get a taste of what the society does and how we operate before you buy, ensuring that there is no pressure to become a member if you're just curious! While we are online, we aren't charging membership, but it's something to be aware of if you do continue to come to in person meetings.
