A Cambridge based society for those passionate (or curious) about Shakespeare. We regularly hold informal and fun events to explore/discuss the Bard's works. Open to all members of the University.
Hi and welcome to the Shakespeare Society (Shakesoc) directory page!
Our society was founded in 2019 by four English undergrad students to create a fun and relaxed space to talk about Shakespeare's work. We hold weekly meetings - or "Shakes" - on Wednesdays at Clare or Pembroke where we explore the theme of the week over drinks and snacks. Every 3 weeks, we hold special events like film screenings, conferences, and creative workshops that can involve creative writing, directing, and acting (amongst other things).
We are open to all university members, so feel free to attend one of our sessions anytime!
We encourage members to bring their own thoughts and ideas (or even just favourite quotes) around every weekly topic to spark exciting conversations/debates. On a normal Shake, we usually have volunteering members hold mini-conferences around the weekly topic, and we also tend to explore one or two controversial statements connected to that theme. Don't worry if you don't have anything to bring or if you just want to listen! This is a really chill and friendly group, and Shakes are always great opportunities to meet new people and share your own interests! :)
Since this is a brand new society, we welcome any feedback on the sessions and want to hear your ideas of what you would like to see happening at Shakesoc.
Our next event is currently the Virtual Freshers Fair on the 6th of October where we will be presenting the society with an interactive Q+A and more.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions! We look forward to seeing you soon!
