The time has come. Cadenza is now auditioning new members for 2020-21!
We are looking for a bass, an alto and a soprano this year, and are open to people joining from any musical background. Auditions this year have obviously had to be slightly different from normal, so we’ve opted for the first round to be in the form of videos rather than in person. Whilst this is less than ideal, it goes without saying we will still try our utmost to judge people fairly and objectively.
To audition, we require you to send us two videos of you singing unaccompanied. The first video should be a complete, non-classical song of your choice (if possible, try to pick a song in the same vocal range as the voice part you’re auditioning for). Could be a pop song, a musical theatre number or a jazz standard. We're looking for voices that will slot nicely into our sound as well as being able to hold their own on a solo line. Try to show off your tone just as much as your range and technique!
The second video should be a video purely showing your range. For this, please start on a note in the middle of your range and work your way up as high as you can on an open vowel like 'la', then repeat from the same note in the middle of your range to as low as you can.
Here's how to sign up for an audition. Firstly, visit our society page (https://www.cambridgesu.co.uk/organisation/cadenza/), then log in via Raven and 'purchase' a Cadenza membership. We'll then contact you with confirmation and provide you with the relevant WeTransfer links and more specific instructions. The deadline for signing up is Sunday 11th October, and for sending us videos is Wednesday 14th!
Feel free to message us here or at email@example.com if you have any questions.
Good luck! We’re really looking forward to hearing from you all!

Founded in 1997 as a thirty-strong conducted Jazz ensemble, Cadenza became a smaller, close-harmony a cappella group in 2002. Since then, the group has had a number of critically acclaimed successes, winning the Voice Festival UK University Championships in 2011, and coming first in the Cambridge A Cappella Competition 2015.
Made up of students studying in Cambridge, Cadenza has become famed for their bombastic, beautiful arrangements and striking choreography, as well as a unique sense of humour and jaw-dropping mashups. Performing genre-spanning arrangements of their favourite tunes, they perform both in Cambridge and beyond throughout the year culminating in the best entertainment May Week has to offer. Cadenza were Voice Festival UK Finalists in 2016, coming away with an award for Outstanding Musicality in the semi-finals, as well as the award for Outstanding Arrangement for their chilling version of Hide and Seek in the final.
In the past few years, the group have released their debut single and music video, Thrill of the Uptown Freak, and reached the UK Finals of the prestigious ICCAs, placing them amongst the best a cappella groups the UK has to offer. We've kept busy during the COVID-19 lockdown, virtually recording two music videos, one of which was featured by Voces8 as part of their 'Weekly Virtual Choir Spotlight' series. Interested in joining us?
The group auditions at the beginning of Michaelmas term every year, look out for us at the virtual freshers' fair or send us an email!
