CUSPS: the only music society in Cambridge which welcomes complete beginners with no previous experience of steel pans, or any musical instrument!

CUSPS is the only music society in Cambridge which welcomes complete beginners with no previous experience of steel pans, or any musical instrument!

About CUSPS

We teach our members how to play the steel pan from scratch, and play music ranging from Stevie Wonder to ABBA and Disney. We welcome players of all abilities and also encourage our members to have a go at arranging pieces for the band themselves. We typically perform for garden parties and May Balls at the end of the year, as well as busking in the town centre at the end of terms.

We also offer all our band members the chance to learn about the history and culture of the instrument, and to engage with the broader steel pan community in the UK through events such as the Panorama competition at Notting Hill Carnival, and Steelpan conferences.

About the Steel Pans

The steel pan is a chromatic instrument originating from Trinidad, typically made from oil drums and played using sticks with rubber tips. We have tenor pans which carry the tune, double seconds and double guitars (two pans per person) which carry chords, and a four-pan bass which carries the bass line.
