Marks Out Of Tenancy (MOOT) - further updates

Featured news

We’re really pleased to be teaming up with Marks Out of Tenancy (MOOT): a platform created by renters, for renters. Think of it as the TripAdvisor of student housing: a space where you can share your renting experiences, read about others’, and make more informed decisions about where (and who) you rent from. By sharing honest feedback, you’re not only helping future tenants but you’re also holding landlords accountable and giving recognition to the good ones. So, here’s what you need to know about how MOOT works and how they keep things fair, safe and supportive.

How does MOOT keep reviews safe and fair?

Proactive moderation.

Before any review goes live, MOOT uses smart moderation tools to check for language that could be legally problematic. Especially for anything that might be defamatory. This helps catch issues early, so what gets published is respectful, fair, and safe for everyone involved.

What if a landlord complains about a review?

Sticking to the law

MOOT follows the UK’s Defamation (Operators of Websites) Regulations 2013. This means there’s a clear legal process if a review is flagged. They assess it carefully and respond appropriately. MOOT has successfully handled multiple legal challenges from landlords. The platform protects your right to speak honestly, while also giving landlords the opportunity to respond fairly.

Why are reviews allowed without landlord permission?

It’s legally allowed and important

MOOT can legally process and publish landlord names and rental property addresses without needing landlord consent, using what’s called a legitimate interest under UK data protection law. This exact issue was reviewed by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), who agreed that MOOT’s approach is lawful and fair. Simply put: your right to share useful information for the public good carries real weight.

How does MOOT balance freedom of expression with fairness?

A thoughtful approach to moderation

MOOT believes in your right to share your experience but also recognises that freedom of expression has its limits. They carefully weigh the public benefit of a review against any potential harm to individuals’ reputations or privacy. This makes sure the site stays balanced, constructive, and respectful.

What if a landlord thinks a review is unfair?

A clear complaints process

If a landlord disagrees with a review, they can use MOOT’s official complaints procedure. In rare cases, they might escalate it to the ICO, usually about how their data is being handled. So far, no reviews have ever been taken down as a result. MOOT makes it clear how landlord information is used in their Privacy Policy, and everything is processed lawfully and transparently.

Are reviews really anonymous?

Yes. Your identity is protected

MOOT takes anonymity seriously. Reviews never include your name (unless you choose to add it), profile image, or exact move-in or move-out dates. The only visible details are the rental address and the year you moved out, so nothing that could be used to identify you directly. You are always in control, so that means writing a review is totally optional, and you can edit or delete your review at any time. Landlords are also given the chance to reply, helping to keep things fair and balanced.

Does MOOT offer support beyond reviews?

Yes. It’s not just a review site

MOOT is part of a wider community of support for renters. They keep in touch with users and can direct you to helpful resources and organisations if you’re having housing issues or just want to understand your rights better. Their Renters’ Rights Resources page is a great place to start if you want clear, reliable information.

Why are we working with MOOT?

Because we believe in a rental sector that’s transparent, supportive, and fair. MOOT gives student renters a platform to be heard — and we’re proud to support that. Whether you’re sharing a difficult experience or giving credit where it’s due, your voice matters.

If you’d like to learn more about how MOOT works or how to share your experience, check out their website or get in touch with us at the SU. We’re always happy to help. Together, we can help balance out the power-asymmetries between renters and landlords in Cambridge to build a better, fairer renting experience, one honest review at a time.
