What is the Cambridge Access Programme?

Real Students, Real Experience”

The Cambridge Access Programme is a student-led mentoring programme for students from underrepresented backgrounds. The programme provides a unique insight into student life and study at Cambridge University, delivered by students, for students. Building on the foundation of the former Shadowing Scheme, it offers an opportunity to gain authentic insights through online mentoring, honest reflections and meaningful conversations with a current Cambridge student, giving prospective students the ability to envision their future and to pursue their ambitions.

Year 12 students at a state school in the UK (S5 in Scotland or Year 13 in Northern Ireland) are eligible to apply for the Programme as mentees. They will be partnered with current undergraduate students at the University of Cambridge who will be their designated mentors.

Contents of the programme:

  • Four months of mentoring, including weekly messages, with a current Cambridge student who is their mentor, studying within the mentee's desired area of study.

  • Access to myth-busting webinars about Cambridge University, focusing on seminars from underrepresented groups, led by current students and Cambridge SU.

  • Access to information from Cambridge college staff, providing mentees with knowledge about college support, processes, and culture.

  • Webinars and information about the Cambridge application process.

  • Invited to attend an exclusive in-person one-day visit to see the real Cambridge; mentees will have the opportunity to attend with parents or guardians. The day will include seminars, lectures and talks from current students, hosted at a Cambridge College.

Programme timeline:

  • The programme will run from the 18th January to 7th May 2027

  • The one-day visit will be in March, and mentees will be able to select whether they’re interested in attending on the application form. The one-day visit is optional, and selecting whether you will or won’t attend will not affect your chance of getting a place on the Programme.

Applications to join the programme as a mentee are OPEN and close on October 12th.

Applications to join the programme as a mentor open on the 28th of September and close on October 26th
