Feeling Homesick? Let's be Homesick Together!

Hello! We are Bryan and Solomon. We are first-years, studying Engineering and Linguistics respectively.

As International students, we know that you have come a long way. All of us come with the greatest dreams, yet there is a lot to contend with — homesickness, feelings of not fitting in, language barriers, UK food (haha), and all other issues that International students relate to… Here's the thing. We’re all in this — together. We are here to be with you.

Here are some things that we are eager to do in the post of JCR International Officers.

1. Building support for international students:

  • Initiate an International Students' family scheme.
  • Organise workshops for unique international student needs: e.g. banking, food, homesickness, cultural shocks.
  • Establish social media accounts for Fitz’ international-related resources, our International diversity via Instagram/Facebook.

2. Service to the international community:

  • Advocate for International students, and raising issues to the college. Especially: increasing storage space for international students over the holidays, matters of discrimination, feeling isolated, and more. We’re here to represent your views, and we’re eager to hear them.
  • Working closely with BME, LGBTQ+, Welfare, Accom and other JCR officers to jointly tackle issues which affect international and home students alike.
  • Provide a listening ear for the challenges that international students face. You are not alone.

3. Sharing our diversity:

  • Host more international cultural events to connect students with shared backgrounds: e.g. an International open mic, and a “dumplings night” (many cultures have different kinds of dumplings)
  • Promote cross-cultural engagement and unity at Fitz, through organising days-out and community pinboards to share about our diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Display national flags in the Hall Building to represent our International unity.

Our experieneces with leadership equip us with the confidence and skills to be Int'l JCR officers: Solomon is part of Hong Kong's Youth Ambassadors' Scheme, and Bryan had undertaken Singapore's rigorous National Service. If you're into making Fitz a more diverse, inclusive and internationally-minded environment, give Bryan and Solomon a vote!

Thank you!
