The Eton Fives Club is one of the older sports clubs at the University, established in the 1920's with the first Varsity match in 1927. The club is at the University Sports Centre West Cambridge site
CUEFC is a friendly and welcoming club dedicated to playing and spreading the word about Eton Fives.
This weird and wonderful sport is probably best described as like playing squash with your hands. Players wear padded gloves and hit a cork ball around our very uniquely shaped court (seriously look it up). All of the ledges and the buttress creates lots of opportunity for both somewhat chaotic bounces but also clever tactical placement of the ball at a higher level making fives a very dynamic sport at all levels.
We train twice a week at the university sports centre on tuesday and thursday evenings however there is absolutely no pressure to turn up to training sessions as all of us at Cambridge live busy lives. Whilst some of our players have played fives before many of the players at Cambridge started here and had never even heard of eton fives before! There is opportunity for competition both as the university team and we also send pairs to national competitions.
The highlight of the year is the annual varsity match against Oxford where there are opportunities to earn a half blue. We also run fun tournaments within the club including our dedicated beginners tournament hosted by Magdelene college. However the club is very chilled and most of our players are more casual choosing to enjoy playing fives, chatting with friends and enjoying our excellent socials.
We hope to see lots of new and old players on the courts this year. feel free to drop by our training sessions 7-9 tuesdays and thursdays or come to our taster sessions advertised on our socials at the start of the year. feel free to reach out if you have any questions via email or on our socials.
