Voting is now open, and here is everything you need to know about this year's Leadership Elections!
What is voting?
Cambridge SU is the body that represents students at the University of Cambridge. Each year, students vote for elected officers: President (UG), President (PG), VP Education & Widening Participation, VP Welfare & Liberation, and VP Student Community & Societies. These officers represent student interests to the University, and campaign on issues close to students' hearts. Voting is done online, and only Cambridge University students can vote. You rank candidates in order of preference, and the results decide these paid (or volunteer, for University Councillor) roles for the next academic year. The SU Sabbatical Officers often sit in meetings where the student voice actually affects decisions. They can influence real policies and campaigns!
How do I vote?
Visit the Cambridge SU website to cast your vote. Wait for the voting period to open — there will be specific start and end times published on the Cambridge SU elections page. Vote online via the Cambridge SU voting platform (linked from the SU website).
Rank candidates in order of preference for each role you want to vote in. The election uses Single Transferable Vote (STV), so you can rank as many (or as few) candidates as you like.
STV means your vote transfers to your next preference if your top choice either has enough votes already or is eliminated.
Check your email/University login for reminders and the direct voting link when voting opens.
But hurry, voting closes on Thursday 26th February at 3pm.
Why should I vote?
- Decisions that affect your daily life - Sabbatical Officers have influence on areas such as education, welfare, housing, and society support. Read their manifestos and you may find their prioritises align with yours!
- Have your voice represented to the University - Sabbatical Officers are the official channel between students and the University. If you want your student concerns taken seriously, choosing who speaks for you is vital!
- Hold the SU accountable - Voting and engaging with manifestos pushes candidates to be more student-focused, whether they win or not.
- Shape your University - Sabbatical Officers set the tone on inclusion, equality, student activism, and what kinds of events and campaigns to promote.
- It’s quick and easy - It takes five minutes and is easy to access!
Voting is the simplest way to make sure the people in charge are advocating for what you care about as a student! Vote now!
