Alongside the NUS, the sabbatical officer team here at Cambridge SU would like to express our solidarity with the people of Afghanistan following the Taliban's capture of Kabul.
The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) has written a joint statement with the British Universities' International Liaison Association (BUILA) and Universities UK (UUK) to the Foreign Secretary, Home Secretary and the Secretary of State for Education to ask them to safely facilitate the travel of Afghan students and academics to the UK.
We support Cambridge City Council's commitment to helping the UK government resettle refugees from Afghanistan. These recent events have highlighted the need for the important work many of our student members are undertaking in terms of supporting refugees and asylum seekers, and fighting for migrant justice.
We would like to signpost Cambridge Undoing Borders, Cambridge University Amnesty International, Cambridge University Sanctuary Initiative, Cambridge Convoy Refugee Action Group, and Cambridge Must Act as a few of the groups working on these issues which new and returning University of Cambridge students can get involved with if they would like to take direct action in order to improve the lives of people with precarious immigration status.
