CN: Mention of Rape
Cambridge SU has been made aware of the increased presence fo ‘Self-Swab Rape Kits’. The kits have been promoted as a safety tool, but have done so with misleading promotional information. We stand with the collective sentiments shared by those within the Sexual Harm and Rape crisis sector.
We want to stress to students that we do not endorse nor encourage the use of these kits. DNA alone does not lead to a conviction, and self-swab kits can be inadmissible in court, and does not ensure that specialist support is provided. Local sexual assault and rape criss centres are free, and are staffed with trained crisis workers and medical examiners - they are professional, can collect evidence safely, and ensure appropriate health checks and contraception are provided.
Specialist support is always best, we have linked available resources below.
Harassment and Violence Support Service (HVSS) - The University’s Harassment and Violence Support Service (HVSS) offers specialist support for students who have (or think they may have) experienced any form of sexual harassment, misconduct or violence. This includes domestic abuse, and harassment relating to religion or race.
