The Academic Year Is Nearly Over! Now, Let’s Talk Packing...
With term almost over, the dreaded move-out date is likely looming on your calendar. But fear not, packing doesn't have to be a nightmare. We’ve rounded up some top tips to make your departure seamless, stress-free, and maybe even a little bit fun.
1. Master the Checklist
Before you start throwing things into boxes, clear your mind by writing everything down. Your checklist should include:
-
Confirming your exact move-out deadline with your college
-
Sorting any final bills or college accounts
-
Categorising your belongings into Keep, Donate, and Toss
Trust us, a solid list ensures you won't leave your favourite hoodie or crucial chargers behind
2. Plan Your Logistics Early
Don’t let move out day turn into a frantic rush.
-
If you’re getting a lift: Check the parking restrictions and loading zones at or near your College ahead of time.
-
If you’re taking the train or coach: Double-check your departure times and make sure you're packed well in advance. There is truly nothing worse than sprinting through Cambridge with three suitcases.
-
Need a hand? If you have heavy items, check in with your college Porters to see if they can lend a hand or a trolley.
3. The Great Declutter
Instead of throwing away non-perishables or canned goods, you can donate them to the Cambridge City Foodbank (located at Orwell Furlong, CB4 0PP).
The same goes for the 'stuff' you’ve accumulated over the year like clothes, room decor, or extra furniture. If you don't want to lug it home, consider selling it online or donating it to a local charity shop. Less weight for you, a great cause for someone else.
4. Pack Smart, Future-You Will Thank You
If you’re returning to university next year, organisation now is a gift to your future self. Label your boxes by room or category (e.g., Bathroom Supplies, Desk Essentials). When you move into your new accommodation in October, unpacking will be an absolute breeze.
5. Make it Fun
Packing doesn’t have to be a chore. Put on a great playlist, invite your friends over to help, and take some time to reminisce over the memories you made this year. Once the final box is taped up, celebrate all your hard work with a scoop from Jack’s Gelato or a well-earned relax at Grantchester Meadows, whatever floats your boat!
We hope you have safe travels home, and have a wonderful summer!
