Black History Month: Reclaiming Narratives - Documentary Screening and Discussions

Event: Educationally Subnormal: A British Scandal
Date: Thursday, 3rd October, 2024
Time: 3–5 pm
Venue: Boys Smith Room, Fisher Building, St John’s College, St. John’s Street, Cambridge, CB2 1TP

Join us for a special screening of Educationally Subnormal: A British Scandal, a powerful documentary that uncovers one of the most shocking chapters in Britain's educational history. In the 1960s and 70s, hundreds of Black children were wrongly labelled as "educationally subnormal" and sent to schools designed for those considered to have low intelligence. For the first time, some of these former pupils have come forward to share their experiences in this ground-breaking BBC documentary.

Following the screening, there will be an open discussion session, offering a space to reflect on the documentary’s key themes, engage in meaningful dialogue, and reclaim the narratives around Black educational history in Britain.

Why attend?
This event offers a vital opportunity to shed light on a hidden history, explore systemic racism in education, and foster conversations about the lasting impact of these policies on the Black community.

This event is part of Black History Month 2024 at Cambridge, under the theme Reclaiming Narratives. All are welcome!
