Hello, I’m Sara and I am a second-year Geography student running to be the JCR Environmental Officer.
Being from Bangladesh, I am acutely aware of the threat contemporary environmental change poses to the livelihood of people, and as a geographer, I want to ensure Fitzwilliam does its part to ensure a sustainable future. Think global, act local!
What I aim to do as the Environmental Officer:
- Improve awareness of green events occurring within the college through social media
- Work with members of the JCR committee such as the BME officer, Class Act officer and others to plan workshops to educate students on intersectionality and climate change vulnerability.
- Consolidate connections with the Cambridge Hub and the Cambridge Climate Society to plan speaker events.
- Continue the past Environmental Officer’s work by trying to increase the number of bins around the college to decrease littering and introduce bins for batteries
- Put pressure on the college to improve wall insulation to decrease energy consumption and energy costs
Relevant experiences:
Geography Ambassador for the Royal Geographical Society
- I work with Geography teachers in sixth forms to arrange speaking events that introduce undergraduate studies to sixth form students. The time management and speaking skills I gained from this will be invaluable to ensure that the goals I set in this manifesto are achieved.
LGBT Network core member
- I worked with staff members and students to make my sixth form a safe space for everyone. I am keen to improve the communication between the JCR and students to encourage student participation in making Fitzwilliam the blueprint for an environmentally friendly college.
