Small Actions, Big Impact

I am passionate about making Fitzwilliam College a greener, more sustainable community. As Environment Officer, I will work collaboratively with students, staff, and college administration to promote environmentally responsible practices, amplify sustainable initiatives, and ensure that our college leads by example in addressing the climate crisis.

Key Policies and Goal

1. Advocacy for Sustainable College Policies

- Work with the college administration to review and improve energy-saving measures, such as optimizing heating systems and promoting the use of renewable energy sources.

- Advocate for the expansion of vegetarian and vegan options in the cafeteria, reducing the environmental impact of our food choices.

- Collaborate with the college’s procurement team to prioritize sustainable and ethical suppliers.

2. Student Engagement and Education

- Launch a Green Fitz awareness campaign, providing practical tips for students to reduce waste, save energy, and adopt sustainable habits.

- Organize workshops and speaker events to educate students on pressing environmental issues and personal action steps.

- Promote use of existing college resources, such as bike racks, recycling points, and eco-friendly practices in accommodation.

3. Waste Reduction Initiatives

- Advocate for a “Swap Shop” or donation system at the end of each term to reduce unnecessary waste and promote re-use of items like books, clothes, and kitchenware.

- Work with catering to implement clearer signage for food waste and recycling bins to improve proper disposal practices.

- Encourage the college to transition to reusable cups and cutlery across campus events.

4. Green Spaces and Biodiversity

- Collaborate with the gardening team in maintaining biodiverse areas on campus

5. Building Collaborative Networks

- Build stronger ties with students and other colleges’ Environment Officers to share ideas and best practices.

- Seek external partnerships with local organizations to bring new sustainability projects to Fitzwilliam.
