Vote Rosa Lumsden for LGBTQ+ Officer!
My Vision
Hello! I am Rosa (she/they), a first-year English student running to be your LGBTQ+ Officer. I’d love to make sure Fitz stays a place where everyone can be themselves and feel safe and happy doing so. I wish to foster a supportive, intersectional, kind community. The newness of university comes with so much joy, but it can also come with some challenges for queer folk. I’d like to help ease those challenges in any way I can.
I Would…
- Run all sorts of LGBTQ+ socials! I would attempt to cater for as wide a range of interests as possible with formals, movie nights, pub crawls, karaoke, and sport. I would also be open to suggestions!
- Be a person for anyone to chat to. Sexuality is often a really complicated thing and having someone to talk things through with can really help.
- Hold regular wellbeing drop-in sessions (with snacks!) so that chat is easy to have.
- Make sure high-quality sex education forms a key part of 'Welcome to Fitz'.
- Organise a series of LGBTQ+ talks for queer theory fans!
- Grow the LGBTQ+ family scheme, making sure all freshers feel safe and included when they start.
- Endeavour to make sure the voices of the Fitz queer community feature are heard, listened to, and acted upon. I would do this by collaborating with other college officers to make sure LGBTQ+ voices feature in discussions.
- Support and promote the huge variety of talent within the Fitz LGBTQ+ community. This would include the hosting of music showcases, the publishing of writing, and the holding of art exhibitions.
- Work with other societies to ensure the growth of community beyond LGBTQ+ socials.
- Raise awareness about lesser-known sexualities and aspects of sexuality with days of visibility.
- Connect with LGBTQ+ communities Cambridge-wide.
Why Me?
I think I would be a great fit for this role because I am a queer person who really cares about inclusivity and being kind. I have been a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights for the majority of my life and would really value the chance to use that experience for the good of this wonderful college. I held various leadership positions at my sixth form (such as being a prefect), meaning I have experience in formally representing people’s views in a committee setting. I love queer theory and last year I organised a project for LGBTQ+ History Month on queerness and space. This would allow me to take a unique approach to raising awareness. I have also struggled with my own sexuality at various points in my life meaning my approach to advocacy and listening would be grounded in personal experience.
