Introducing your JCR Access Officer

Jess Morrissey

Hi! I'm Jess- a second year Bio NatSci and Access Officer at Corpus. I'm originally from the north and, stereotypically, love a brew as much as a night out. In my role as Access Officer, I help out during the interview period and on residentials and open days. I have so much love for Corpus and the people here, and enjoy passing on this enthusiasm through meeting prospective students.

Q&As

What is your favourite thing about Corpus Christi?

Jess

I love its size- both physically and in terms of student numbers. You get to know everyone in your year as well as the years above and below. Sometimes it means getting from one side of college to the other takes an extra 10 minutes though! The staff are absolutely lovely as well- we've even got an *unofficial* college dog.

Describe your first year accommdation.

Jess

My first year rent was £1600 per term on a 30 week lease (I moved out over the holidays). Corpus has minimal kitchen facilities- most first years only have a fridge, kettle and microwave. However we more than make up for it with college catering. Second and third year you can choose accommodation with kitchen facilities, but if lack of facilities is a serious problem first year, tutorial might be able to accommodate for this. Everything but food and electricity (and this is only if you run up a massive bill) is including in the college bill- with an extra fixed charge of £10/15 per term for laundry facilities. We also make sure to keep 1st years in the same accommodation blocks/staircases.

What is the food like?

Jess

Corpus food is very good- with our brunch being so good a lot of students from other colleges turn up for it. Breakfast is offered twice a week, lunch every day (substituted for brunch on the weekend), and dinner every night except Saturday. Catering accommodates for all dietary requirements, and the prices are pretty cheap compared to other colleges. We also have formals twice (in the future three times) a week with student tickets being £11.50 and guest tickets at £15.50.

Does Corpus Christi provide additional funding?

Jess

Corpus added an extra grand to those students max (or near max) the Cambridge Bursary last year as well as a book grant of £200 awarded to any student on the bursary. Corpus also matches any grants awarded from the university's hardship fund. We have several other bursaries and scholarships tutors can apply for on behalf of students. Regardless of background, Corpus also awards travel grants of up to £800 for academic trips during vacations.

What welfare provision does Corpus Christi offer?

Jess

The small number of students leaves a great ratio of staff:students. We have a college nurse as well as a college counsellor who are both in 3/4 days a week.

What are the facilities like at Corpus Christi?

Jess

Officially there are a few rooms available, however as limited work can be done in old house, I wouldn't recommend Corpus for it's accessibility. Cardio and weights in the gym. We also have squash, tennis and basketball courts, as well as football fields and most importantly a pool!  Corpus owns the Corpus playroom. We also have the Fletcher Players as our drama society.

What would you change about Corpus Christi?

Jess

Our main site is quite small compared to other colleges with no room to expand, although we do have Leckhampton about a 15 minute walk away. I'd also quite like better kitchen facilities.
