About

A diverse reading society aimed at anyone with an interest in ancient literature, no matter what course you study! We read all of our texts in translation, and meet weekly to discuss passages.

A diverse reading society aimed at anyone with an interest in ancient literature: anthropologists, historians, ancient linguists, fans of reading who want to widen their book choices, or anybody else. In the past, we have explored texts such as the Mabinogion and the Mahabharata, and spent terms reading texts on themes like 'The Abyss', 'Romance and Lovers', and 'Women of Ancient Literature'. The only criterion for membership is an honest desire to learn more about ancient cultures and their literary works. Beginners who have never studied an ancient language before are especially welcome. Texts are always read in translation, so there is absolutely no knowledge required of any language other than English! We will email the section of the text we are reading to you each week, so you don't have to go out and find it yourself. There will be snacks, you are welcome to join at any time during the term.

For more information please sign up to our mailing list, soc-ancient-interested, using https://lists.cam.ac.uk/sympa/, or email us at ancientlit@cambridgesu.co.uk.

We do also offer membership (£5 for a year, £10 for life), but we don't ask for this until at least halfway through your first term with us. The reason for this is so that you can get a taste of what the society does and how we operate before you buy, ensuring that there is no pressure to become a member if you're just curious! This is something to be aware of if you do continue to come to in person meetings.
