About

A diverse reading society aimed at anyone with an interest in ancient literature, no matter what course you study! We read all of our texts in translation, and meet weekly to discuss passages.

A diverse reading society aimed at anyone with an interest in ancient literature: anthropologists, historians, ancient linguists, fans of reading who want to widen their book choices, or anybody else. The only criterion for membership is an honest desire to learn more about ancient cultures and their literary works. Beginners who have never studied an ancient language before are especially welcome. Texts are always read in translation, so there is absolutely no knowledge required of any langauge other than English!

This Michaelmas term we will be meeting in-person at Queen's College on Saturday afternoons to discuss passages from the Irish Ulster Cycle text 'Táin Bó Cúailnge', the Cattle Raid of Cooley. We will email the section of the text we are reading to you each week, so you don't have to go out and find it yourself! Our Fresher's Squash (first meeting for freshers) will take place at 1:30PM on Saturday 9th in the Bowett Room, Queen's College. We stress that this is open to anyone, especially those who know nothing about this text since the aim of the society is to enable people to learn more about ancient literature. There will be snacks, and every year is welcome to attend, especially those who are new to the society, Freshers and Second Years who didn't have this opportunity last year. For more information please sign up to our mailing list and follow our Instagram!

To join our mailing list, please fill in the google form here https://forms.gle/KXHpLXyhU2s5RETt5 . The same link is below. There is absolutely no commitment attached to this, and it enables you to receive our weekly emails containing the text we will be discussing that week, as well as more details about future meetings and events. If you don't hear from us within a week after signing up, please drop us an email/facebook message because sometimes we lose people's signups in the system, so give us a poke and we'll make sure you're definitely added.

We do also offer membership (£7 for a year, £15 for life), but we don't ask for this until at least halfway through your first term with us. The reason for this is so that you can get a taste of what the society does and how we operate before you buy, ensuring that there is no pressure to become a member if you're just curious! This is something to be aware of if you do continue to come to in person meetings.
